Post Where to put Adsense ?
on: October 18, 2011, 00:38

Hi Moe,

I’ve applied to Adsense for an account and I’ve placed my Adsense ad unit skyscraper box in the left hand sidebar of my thesis theme (in the same place as keywordsblogger). Is this the best and only place to put an adsense box for this type of site ? If I was to put more Adsense boxes on my site(which is an info type site, eventually selling my eBook), would this be too much ? How is this determined ?

I noticed that you have Adsense ads inside your posts. Do you have them anywhere else ?

Thanks Alwyn

Hi Alwyn – the resource I always refer people to is the Ultimate Heatmap: http://www.dynamicmedia.com/ultimate-heatmap/ . That document answers a lot of questions about where to place Adsense on a site.

Yes, Moe, the Ultimate Heatmap download is not only amazing and hugely informative but free to boot !

He gives examples of varying degrees of Adsense intensity from ‘polite’ to very aggressive. With my site where I’ll be pushing the opt in form (to build a list) in return for my free guide, I will try out the same layout as you have with keywords blogger. In this case any Adsense revenue would be a bonus. I don’t want to offend my customers and Adsense will not be the goal with this site.

But I am very interested in launching another site(or multiple sites) with the main goal being Adsense and have the ads plastered everywhere! : ))

Which leads to my question about possible alienating your audience. I assume that the main advantage to targeting an audience rather than just a product is so that you can build up a large email list that will have broad appeal in terms of different products that you can promote to them. The assumption here being that, eg, a certain age group of people will most likely have a predictable range of problems that need solutions for. If you then go on sending your list multiple emails on a variety of different products/treatments/ailments etc(that you are not even sure that they have to begin with) wouldn’t the vast majority be turned off by this ? And then you would lose most of your customers who were quite happy with the original product that you sold to them ? What do you think ?

Exactly, Alwyn.

“If you then go on sending your list multiple emails on a variety of different products/treatments/ailments etc(that you are not even sure that they have to begin with) wouldn’t the vast majority be turned off by this ?”

They’ll certainly be turned off if you send them offers that don’t address their needs. You avoid this problem by first finding out their needs (which is the whole point of the Niche Sherpa course!)

I rarely get irate emails from my subscribers (although I admit it does occasionally happen). The reason is that I only send offers that I know will be of interest to them. As I’ve said many times before, deep knowledge of the wants, needs, and pain points of your target audience is key to building an online business.

Hey Moe,

So let’s say you have a big email list of people that either bought or expressed some interest in a back pain relief product that you were promoting. First, how do you determine their age and background ? Do you ask them directly ? So lets now assume you have their age and background info and you can now somewhat accurately guess that most are baby boomer men. How do you then determine if they would be interested in your next promotion, say, hair loss treatment ? Do you just guess and send them the informational/promotional emails anyway ?

And second, how do you determine how much Adsense action you put on a site ? How would a heavy Adsense site differ from keywordsblogger. ? It seems to me that the sites would essentially be the same ? Do you give away free ebooks to get them onto a list, on a heavy Adsense site ? If you did that then you would use up some prime real estate ? Is the content as numerous and as high quality as an info type site ? Do you have any examples of good heavy Adsense sites ?

And assuming that you have determined that Mr X would be interested with what is on one of your heavy Adsense sites, is there ever an instance where you would not send him there ?

Thanks, Alwyn

“First, how do you determine their age and background? Do you ask them directly?”

If you have a big email list, then you probably have a good amount of traffic coming to your site. In that case, you can use a site like Alexa.com or Quantcast.com to figure out the demographics of your visitors. Look at this blog post for instructions on how to use those two websites: http://www.keywordsblogger.com/find-your-audience-how-to-identify-a-niche-audience-to-serve/ . Otherwise, you can send a survey out to them via email, or you can simply infer their age/background by reading the emails they send to you. That’s how I’ve determined the demographic that buys my products. They’ll often say in their emails things like “I’m 52 years old and overweight…”

“How do you then determine if they would be interested in your next promotion, say, hair loss treatment? Do you just guess and send them the informational/promotional emails anyway?”

You can ask them explicitly what types of problems they’re having in a survey, or you can email them offers, and see what % of them (1) open your email, and (2) make a purchase.

“And second, how do you determine how much Adsense action you put on a site?”

All of your Adsense questions are addressed in the resources I’ve already pointed out:

– The Ultimate Heatmap: http://www.dynamicmedia.com/ultimate-heatmap/
http://www.NichePursuits.com
http://www.AdsenseFlippers.com

The best way to answer “what will happen if…?” questions is to test. Time to start implementing, Alwyn!

Evening Moe,

Very good, thanks for the thorough answers. And yes, implementation in Adsense is coming. Before I was very focused on building my website and working with my writers and interviewer and now the eBook. This Adsense thing has hit me like a ton of bricks and it’s back into learning mode for a bit but I feel more confident now to take action. Nothing like experience for confidence.

Thanks, Alwyn

Hi Alwyn – the best learning you’ll get will be from getting traffic to your sites and testing out different ways of optimizing the site (including Adsense, but also affiliate offers, and your own product). All of the things I teach are only “guidelines”. There are a thousand different ways to make money online, and every IMers experience in building a business seems to be different.

Yes, Moe, you are right !

Excellent points. There is no substitute for real world application – for dipping your toe in the market and seeing how she responds.

And I have to go with what I know rather than continuing to learn in the hope that some perfect system will pop up. I feel confident with my freshly concocted strategy and I will keep you posted.

NichePursuits.com is superb for hands on basics. Haven’t looked at AdsenseFlippers.com yet.

Best wishes, Alwyn
