Post Freelance writer fees.

Good morning Moe,

I’ve found a very good writer on oDesk , based in Germany, who I want to hire based on her very impressive sample article that she has submitted to me. This one article only cost me $5 but then she reneged on our gentleman’s agreement after she saw how much time she had to put in to write it. Her revised pay scale is as follows :

Price per 500+ word article :

Lengthy topics(by writing time): 20-25 dollars
Medium topics: 10 dollars
Easy topics: 5 dollars

Does this seem reasonable ? I figure that content is king therefore I have to pay a fairly large sum (relatively) to ensure I get great content. Is this correct thinking ?

I am trying out another writer from Pakistan and although her stuff is cheap and passable at $5 per article across the board it is far from excellent and I feel like the quality just isn’t there.

What do you think ?

Ta, Alwyn

Hi Alwyn – I think you need to find an excellent writer who uses a developing country pay scale, not a Western pay scale!

I agree that content is king, and quality of writing is extremely important. But you’re in this for the long haul, so putting in the time to find an inexpensive (but good-quality) writer now will pay off.

I know that it’s a pain wading through bids and testing out writers, but my advice is to keep looking (and maybe post your requirement on other freelance websites, if necessary).

Moe

I have had similar problem as Alwyn. I got my articles from Nichewriters India. Decent quality for US$ 4-5 per 300 words. But when reading the articles there was often something very artificial about the sound of the writing. I’m not sure if they use spinners or something even tough they claim not to.

I have made offers on freelance sites, and so far they suck.

Moe, Can you recommend a/some quailty writers who uses a developing country pay scale?

The best writers I’ve found are Filipinos on oDesk.com. I highly recommend you check out that site, and specifically look for Filipino writers.

Having said that, Google’s content requirements have changed drastically since Alwyn originally posted this message. In 2015, Google is looking for:

Long articles. I saw a study that said articles of 1,800 words or more rank highest in Google. I’m only posting articles with a minimum length of 1,500 words on my sites now.

Multimedia. The highest-ranking content now has more than just text – it also contains embedded Youtube videos, infographics, tables, etc.

Outbound links. You need to link out to authoritative sources in your content (Google is increasingly using outbound links – not just inbound links – to determine the legitimacy of content
