Post Defining your niche when building your keyword list.
on: February 25, 2011, 14:48

Hey Moe,

Let’s say that you wanted to get into the ‘cancer’ niche and you wanted to focus on ‘cancer cure’ or ‘cancer therapy’ and more specifically ‘natural cancer treatment’. And then within that sub-niche, you wanted to focus on ‘cancer diet’, specifically ‘macro-biotic cancer diet’. In your research you had determined that there was a desire for ‘M-B cancer diet’ and so you thought you could carve out your own little niche. With that in mind, which of these 6 niche keywords would you use at the beginning of Module #7a, when u begin building your broad list of keywords ? And what I mean by that is which one would you use to plug into semantic tools, thesaurus, Wiki and the Google keyword tool etc to get related keywords ? And I am assuming that you just pick one and run the same one through the entire process ? If you use the most chunked up keyword ‘cancer’, you will get the broadest range of keyword results but many not related and conversely, if you use the most chunked down keyword, ‘M-B cancer diet’ you will get the narrowest list of keywords but more related.

Hi Alwyn,

When building a seed list of keywords, it’s always good to start broad – because if you start too narrow, you might miss out on opportunities. Having said that, you want to go broad while also choosing relevant keywords that have good search volume.

In your case, I would start with “cancer diet”, if it has a good number of searches. If not, I would go up one level to “natural cancer treatment”.

What’s a “good number” of searches? Again, that’s an arbitrary decision. I mention 30,000 as a cut-off in one of the modules, but it’s really something you have to test out. Thirty thousand searches in one niche might be enough to generate a full-time income; in another niche, it might generate very little income.

Ok, cool, that answers my question, thx, Moe. And I’m glad you like my profile pic — I thought the tie might lend an air of authority/credibility ! Ha ! We all gotta fake it til we make it !

Hey Moe, sorry, I have been busy trying to get a VPN hooked up and it has consumed most of my time as of late.

I just want to reiterate to make sure we are on the same page. You will notice the ranking I had assigned was incorrect and the numbers from the Google keyword tool tell a different story.

cancer gets 368,000 exact match searches(EMS) per month
cancer cure – 5,400 EMS
cancer diet – 2,900 EMS
cancer therapy – 2,400 EMS
natural cancer treatment – 590 EMS
macrobiotic cancer diet – 58 EMS

[cancer treatment – 12,100 EMS]

So, I would guess then, that with the above numbers in mind i might want to start with ‘cancer therapy’ and if the results were too puny then jump up to ‘cancer diet’ and so on. Am i correct in my reasoning?

With snoring – the mother niche you did in the tutorial, Module #7a. the Google keyword tool numbers are :

snoring – 33,100 EMS
how to stop snoring – 22,200 EMS
stop snoring – 14,800 EMS
cure snoring – 1,000 EMS
stop snoring exercises – 880 EMS
snoring exercises – 390 EMS
singing for snorers – 170 EMS

You picked ‘cure snoring’ and how would your results differ if you had picked ‘stop snoring’ ? Would this have been a better keyword phrase to use for your niche, ‘snoring exercises’ ?

Thanks as always, Alwyn

Yep, that’s it.

“You picked ‘cure snoring’ and how would your results differ if you had picked ‘stop snoring’ ? Would this have been a better keyword phrase to use for your niche, ‘snoring exercises’?”

This is a bit tricky, because you have to figure out what the difference in people’s minds is between “cure snoring” and “stop snoring”. In my mind, “cure snoring” is a stronger phrase – to me it implies a greater keenness to solve the problem. But “stop snoring” could also work. Ideally, you would run a survey and/or do forum research on both terms.

Thanks for your answer, Moe.

Having semi sorted the above problem, another uncertainty has popped up, hence, the other question (why build a KW list?) in this module.

I’m still in the dark somewhat with this KW research bizness. There is a piece missing and I can’t put my finger on it….need some time and some action to clear the fog.
