Post Micro-niche size decision factors (B)
on: February 19, 2011, 08:05

I posted this a few days ago but it was in the wrong section.

It’s still nagging me so I would like a response from you.

In the Google keyword tool, ‘snoring exercises’ (broad) gets 3,600 searches a mth and ‘snoring exercises’ (exact) gets only 390 per mth. Despite this low volume you still considered it a niche with potential because of the high volume on ‘stop snoring’ (74,000), plus the interest that was shown in the forums on singing for snorers/snoring exercises and the feedback you had received on some of your sites. Is the relatively low number (3,600) any kind of red flag for potential at this point ? What are the most important numbers/factors to consider at this point ?

The numbers are great for the ‘stop snoring’ general niche and we know from the forum research that people are interested in ‘snoring exercises’ but is ‘snoring exercises’ at 3,600 showing enough volume ? How would you make the decision to continue ?

Thanks, Alwyn the Learner

Great question, Alwyn, and you’re right – the low volume for keywords related to snoring exercises would normally put me off a niche (especially because the niche doesn’t involve making or saving money).

The reason I got excited about snoring exercises – despite it having low search volume – is that it’s a topic that my existing customers have asked me about in emails. So, I’m taking these combined factors as a sign that there might be an underserved need: (a) a large and stable “mother” niche (i.e. snoring cures), (b) a good amount of interest in forums, and (c) spontaneous interest from my existing customers.

Hope that makes sense. If not, just let me know.

Ok, good, you confirmed what I was thinking, thanks, Mr Moe. It would appear then that the KW numbers alone are not always the deciding factor. Once you have confirmed that the mother niche is large and stable, the surest way to know if a micro-niche is a good’n is either by trolling the forums or by getting feedback from your existing customers or of course by a good ‘ol survey.
